Drop-In Center Meal
Each month, our committee shops for the ingredients, prepares and serves a fresh, hot meal and dessert for about 90 adults at the Drop-In Center in downtown Wichita. Our Pleasant Valley youth group even takes on this project during spring break.
Backpacks and School Supplies to Cloud Elementary Students
Each summer, the committee advertises to the congregation and gathers backpacks and new school supplies to help children in neighborhood elementary schools.
Tutoring and Mentoring in Schools
The Mission and Service Committee promotes tutoring and mentoring with individual students at Pleasant Va
lley and
Cloud schools during the school year. Volunteers from last
year each tutored or mentored from one to three students
each week. Teachers at the school say academic progress and
classroom behavior are improved by having a caring adult to
regularly reinforce good habits.
Habitat For Humanity Build - Habitat Village
Each year, we present opportunities to help build a Habitat home in our neighborhood. Pleasant Valley had 18 volunteers attend the Fall, 2007 Habitat Village Build. Our Congregation helped cut lumber, installed kitchen cabinets, built a shed, and worked on other construction jobs at the Habitat site.
Share the Warmth Campaign
Collecting coats, sweaters, mittens, and gloves to donate to the UMC Klothes Kloset, which are then given
away to families in Wichita area.
Food Drives For United Methodist Open Door
Ongoing food drives of non-perishable food items are organized by the Mission and Service Committee. Members also insure that donated items reach the Open Door outreach center in a timely manner for distribution to those in need.
Good Sam Fund
Each month, the congregation is invited to donate to the Good Sam Fund. This fund provides small cash grants to individuals who have contacted the church in need of short-term financial aid. After following a screening process to qualify, applicants are either referred to agencies in the area or we may decide to help them with a financial gift. The Good Sam Fund has helped families who have fallen behind on utility payments, rent, or mortgage
payments, prescriptions, etc.
Summer Vacation Bible School in Garden City
Mission and Service Committee members take a multi-age group from PVUMC on an abbreviated summer Vacation Bible School. We hit the road in July to share VBS with about 60 children at the Mexican-American Ministries Center in Garden City, Kansas. This is a great way to extend the ministry and hard work of our own Vacation Bible School committee by using their curriculum and handmade materials with another community. We have about 18 volunteers who share their love of God each summer - many who have just finished a week of dedicated service working in our own VBS.
